Refurbished graphics cards: worth it?
Updated 29 October 2026
A refurbished graphics card sits between new and used: a second-hand GPU that has been checked, cleaned, tested and often repaired, then sold with a warranty. It usually costs a little more than the same card used, and less than new. Whether it's worth paying that extra depends on who did the refurbishing and what warranty you get.
What does refurbished mean?
On eBay UK, "refurbished" is a set of condition grades, not just a word in the title. eBay's refurbished program has grades such as Certified, Excellent, Very Good and Good, with rules on testing, cosmetic condition and warranty. Elsewhere it can mean anything from a full factory rebuild to a quick clean. Look for:
- Manufacturer refurbished: repaired and tested by the maker or its official partner. The best option when you can find one.
- Seller refurbished: tested and repaired by a specialist seller. Quality varies, so check the seller's feedback and what they actually did.
- Open box: returned or unused stock, often as good as new. We show these under "open box / like new".
What a good refurbishment includes
- Full stress test and benchmark under load.
- Clean of the heatsink and fans.
- New thermal paste and, where needed, new thermal pads.
- Replacement of worn or noisy fans.
- Check of the PCB, power connectors and display outputs.
- A written warranty, ideally 6-12 months or more.
Ask the seller which of these were done. A listing that says only "refurbished" with no details or warranty is really a used card.
Refurbished vs used: which is better value?
A refurbished card's main advantages are the warranty and the fresh paste, pads and fans. Those are worth paying for on older or ex-mining cards, where cooling parts are most likely to be worn. For a recent card from a trusted private seller, a used card at the typical price, bought through eBay checkout with its Money Back Guarantee, is often just as safe and cheaper. Compare today's used GPU prices, then set "Condition" to refurbished in our deal finder to see refurbished listings with their price against typical.
Checking a refurbished GPU when it arrives
- Check the model and serial number against the listing, and run GPU-Z to confirm it's genuine.
- Stress test it for 20-30 minutes and watch temperatures and fans.
- Keep the warranty paperwork and the packaging.
Our full used GPU checklist covers every test.
FAQ
Are refurbished GPUs reliable?
From a reputable refurbisher, yes: they've been tested more thoroughly than most used cards and come with a warranty.
Do refurbished graphics cards come with a warranty?
They should. eBay's refurbished grades include a warranty from the seller or eBay; check its length and who provides it before buying.
